Written by Richard Thomas/ November 29, 2001 There are moments in life when circumstances beyond our control or beyond our capacity to bear, seem to overwhelm us. It is during these times that a person longs to sprout wings and fly away. It is an re-occuring dream for many of us, including myself, when we feel threatened, we jump toward the sky to escape the monsters that are chasing us. The monsters that chase all of Adam’s race is the grave. And time is on its side. Let’s face it - life is about time and all the time saving devices we accumulate to save us time have accelerated our pace to use up the time saved. When we watch our children graduate from high school or college or give them away in marriage or at the end of our days we will find ourselves thinking aloud - “Where did the time go.” The Bible describes the life of Adam’s race with terms like “shadow” or “vapor”. I believe subconsciously we feel the urgency to make the most of or short lifespan. That is why Jesus said “...come to Me...” [ Matthew 11:28 “...seek first, the kingdom of God...” [ Matthew 6:33 ] Any undertaking apart from the pursuit of the kingdom of God is a waste of time if your love for Jesus Christ is not the motivation. There seems to be a prevailing and lucrative pedagogy in the name of life organization compelling us to fill in the gaps in our daily lives. There were times in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ that He and the disciples barely had time to eat. It was during these times of rush when Jesus took His disciples aside to a solitary place to relax.[ Mark 6:31- 32] We find Jesus taking a rest beside a well in Samaria on a hot day or a nap in the stern of a boat during a storm. Yet He was never rushed nor in a panic nor should we be when we keep our eyes on Him.[ John 11:1 - 6 ] Even though He had a schedule to keep at Jerusalem, Jesus was never overwhelmed by the mission. Some things are good to be overwhelmed by, i.e. joy, good fortune, adoration, hospitality. Keeping our eyes on the author and finisher of our faith [ Hebrews 12:2 ] is the key. Realizing that we are weak will turn the key and allow God’s power to flow through us. [ Zechariah 4:6 ] Whether you are overwhelmed with fear, anger, hatred, sorrow “ ...we are more than a conquerors through Him...” [ Romans 8:37 ] Once we look up from our circumstances, out of the pit of despondency, toward Heaven’s throne and realize we have access to the throne of grace by reason of the blood of Jesus Christ, we find our feet on solid ground again. Are you overwhelmed by the cares of this world ? Do you know that this world couldn’t care less about you ? There is one who cares so much about you that He came into this world through a manger. [ John 3:16 ] When He left this world, the blood on His hands was His own. And “...we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” [ Romans 8:37 ] If you are seeking hope for a new life, it all begins with Jesus. Begin Here!
