Overcoming Sin and Temptation
By John Owen & edited by Kelly Kapic & Justin Taylor / Crossway Books & Bibles

The writings of John Owen are a challenge to any reader, to say the least. His intricacy and complexity are intimidating and his language is downright befuddling at times. However, the depth of thought and the immense value of Owen's works cannot be quantified. His three classic works on sin and temptation are profoundly helpful to any believer who seeks to become more like Jesus Christ.

When you need help overcoming Temptation.
Written by Richard Thomas/ November 31, 2001

What is temptation ?
First off, let the reader understand that temptation is not sin. Temptation is our subconscious craving (Lust) stimulated. Temptation is older than humanity itself. Temptation goes back to when Lucifer attempted to dethrone God. When Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became a man. He took upon Himself all that humans bear in our flesh daily. He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin. The Bible explains that we are tempted when we are drawn away by our own lust. Lust is something we crave subconsciously and irresistibly.[ James 1:14 ] Like a chicken and a bug or a fish and a worm or a cat and a string. When the tempter was in the garden of Eden, where do you think he would be found. The one thing that was withheld from Adam and Eve was the bait that Satan used to (lure) tempt them away from God’s specific command. In other words. Temptation is what draws us away from the “Thou shalt not(s)” of God’s word.

No matter what species of fish you want to catch, you need to study the cravings of the fish you desire to eat or mount on a wall. Manufacturers of fishing lures make millions of dollars annually from the sale of imitations of the food chain for a specific species of fish. The idea is to mimic the look and action of a specific food supply and entice the fish to strike thinking it is an easy meal. Professional fisherman study the types of fish they want to catch. They know what their subject eats and at the optimum time of day. Some professional fisherman earn millions of dollars annually from their favorite pastime prowess, not to mention what their endorsements net. The devil uses the same technique he used in the garden of Eden.[ 1 John 2:16 ] His creel is never empty and his appetite never satisfied with the flesh of those who bear the image of the Creator.[ 1 Peter 5:8 ]

Temptation is not...As stated above, temptation is not the bait, not the sin. Temptation is the presentation of the bait. The moment you are born again, you become a target just as the Son of God was targeted by Satan from birth to death. “If you, are the Son of God?” All those that believe on the name of the Son of God become “children of God”. [ John 1:12 - 13 ] Do not think, beloved, that you will escape the same temptation our Lord endured. ”He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin.” [ Hebrews 4:15 ] Temptation can be very subtle. Remember Satan appear as a very subtle creature. Temptation came to our Lord as... (1) a medium of appeasing His appetite {lust of the flesh}...(2) fame and fanfare, the envy of all {lust of the eye}...(3)trusting in yourself alone {boastful pride of life}.

None of the temptations layed before our Lord had any attraction as they were of this world and He is not.[ John 18:36 ] When we are born again, we are born into the family of God by faith in the Son of God. God’s Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. We are marked as God’s own possession by His Holy Spirit. There is a marriage of God’s spirit with ours. As such, we are not of this world. Therefore the world can have no attraction to us. If it does, we need to check our ownership. If we love this world, the love of the Father is not in us.[ 1 John 2:15 ] If the love of the Father is in us, we cannot be tempted with evil. It simply will not have any attraction for us.

How to avoid temptation? We can’t. Temptation will never die until we are dead. Life will never be temptation free. It will show up when we least suspect it and will destroy everyone claiming to be strong in themselves. Jesus did not live a temptation free life. But before He died on the cross at Calvary, Jesus died to sin. He met temptation at every point of life and died to it by choosing obedience to His Heavenly Father. Jesus plowed through each temptation. Only in Him will we be able to do the same. When faced with temptation, we must ask ourselves; Will this glorify please our Heavenly Father? We that have been born again now have the power to resist Satan’s temptations and he will flee from us as we fix our eyes on the author and finisher of our faith. [read Romans chapter 6] Jesus Christ is the (only)way, the (only)truth and the (only) life.

If you are seeking hope for a new life, it all begins with Jesus. Begin Here!

742750: Lies We Tell Ourselves: How to Say No to Temptation and Put an End to Compromise Lies We Tell Ourselves: How to Say No to Temptation and Put an End to Compromise
By Greg Laurie / Gospel Light

I know it's wrong ... but everybody is doing it.
I'll quit tomorrow.
It's not my fault!
I can't help it; I've been under so much stress ...
I deserve this.

Sound familiar? We often tell a little white lie and then wonder why we were tempted to do something wrong. We don't recognize that the lies we tell ourselves often lead to sinful behavior. In Lies We Tell Ourselves, Laurie takes an honest and often humorous look at the ways we fall into sin and how we frequently rationalize our actions. Drawing from the pages of Scriptures and his own experiences, he shares practical steps you can take to effectively resist temptation and put an end to the compromises that will ultimately harm you. Originally published as I'm Going on a Diet Tomorrow (and Other Lies We Tell Ourselves).

441722: Triumph Over Temptation: Pursuing a Life of Purity Triumph Over Temptation: Pursuing a Life of Purity
By John Owen, abridged & edited by James M. Houston / David C. Cook

Abridged by James Houston from the writings of the Puritan theologian John Owen (1616-1683), this book helps us recover the concepts of sin and individual responsibility our world has all but destroyed. Owen deals with the problem of our sinfulness, showing that there is far more to indwelling sin that many of us realize. He goes on to describe the Holy Spirit's ministry in and to the believer, and the true nature of spiritual growth and progress. Owen embodied the best of Puritan devotion: the awe of God, humility, wisdom, and an awareness of God's grace.
