Finding help when Weary.
Written by Richard Thomas/ December 10, 2001

To be weary is to have carried the weight of the world, so it seems, on your back.  The laborer after a week or even a lifetime of toil...  Parents or one parent raising children...  The teacher...  The soldier...   The one who just can’t find the strength to overcome life’s obstacles, alone.

When Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden of Eden, God declared that the fruit of man’s labor would only “...produce thorns and thistles...by the sweat of his brow he would eat his daily bread till the day he died...” [ Genesis 3:18 - 19 ]   From the time we take our first breath till the last, the sons and daugthers of Adam are on a journey.  Seeking forgiveness in an unforgiving world.  Some perhaps may find consolation in leaving some lasting mark no matter how small.  Some will pass on oblivious of any difference they have made - some evidence of existence.  Archeologists are constantly unearthing the chronicle of someones existence.

When I think of the breakthroughs in science, medicine, technology, engineering etc. etc.  The names of Einstein, Edison, Madam Curie are only the very tip of the iceberg.  Or perhaps the great literary giants as Shakespear, Steinbeck, Twain, Hemingway, London.  All returned to the dust from whence they came. [ Genesis 3:19 ]

Wherever Jesus journeyed during His brief span on Earth He could be found in the synagogue on the sabbath preaching and teaching the multitudes.  Jesus did not draw a small crowd.  No doubt He observed the masses of weary travelers that had come from the farthest corners of Palastine to hear and see Him.  They were not so weary from the traveling as they were from life in general.  For who was He accused of carousing with?  The dregs of society.  Buried under a load of guilt and shame.  Having the door to the kingdom of God slammed in their face by the Pharisitical legal order.

The Sabbath means rest.  It is the end of a week of toil under the sun.   Jesus cried out in the synagogue on the Sabbath... “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”[ Matthew 11:28 ]  (One of the areas of conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders of His day was His interpretation of the Sabbath.)   Jesus Christ is the physical form of the invisible Word.  He is the complete fullfilment of the “Law and the Prophets” - the Word of God - the Scriptures.  The point of all scripture from Genesis to Revelation is “Look to Me and be saved”. [Isaiah 45:22]  In other words ... “Come to Me...and find rest for your soul.”   The same applies to all generations, all races, all genders and all age groups.  God’s voice has gone out into all the world calling all mankind to Himself.  God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself and has given the message of reconciliation to all that bear the mark of the Holy Spirit.

There is an old saying... “Seven days without Jesus makes one weak”.  I’m not sure who to credit the saying to, so if the reader knows, be sure to let me know so I can give due credit.  But if you are weary from carrying the weight of the world, let me ask you this.  Who said you had to carry it?   Are you weary?   Cast all your cares upon the Lord. [1 Peter 5:6-7 ]  Notice that the scripture tells us to cast all our cares on Him.

If you are seeking hope for a new life, it all begins with Jesus. Begin Here!
